Central sleep apnea (CSA)

Central Sleep Apnea, which is far less common, occurs when the area of your brain that controls your breathing doesn’t send the correct signals to the breathing muscles. Then there is no effort to breathe for brief periods.

The most common cause of Central Sleep Apnea is heart disease. Snoring does not typically occur with central apneas. People with Central Sleep Apnea may be more likely to remember awakening than those with Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
