Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Trichomonas kit collection updated

13 Aug 2023

Changes effective Aug. 14

By: By Tish Gross, laboratory/imaging outreach supervisor

We are switching to an updated Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Trichomonas kit at the Salem Health Regional Laboratory. This kit adds Trichomonas results to male urines. Due to inability to report out Trichomonas and the higher recovery rate on vaginal swab (both self-collect and clinician collected) collections, we are discontinuing the Gonorrhea and Chlamydia testing on endocervical swab collections.

Percent sensitivity table

What this means for ordering and collecting:

  • If only a Vaginal Pathogens by DNA Probe (aka Wet Mount) is needed, a vaginal swab will need to be collected using the BD Affirm VPII Collection kit.
  • If both a Vaginal Pathogens by DNA Probe (aka Wet Mount) and a CTNGT or CTNG tests are wanted, then a vaginal swab will need to be collected using the BD Affirm VPII Collection kit (for Vaginal Pathogens by DNA Probe) and a vaginal swab will need to be collected using the BD Molecular Swab Collection kit (for the CTNG or CTNGT).

Urine collection:

  • The urine patient collection for both male and females remain the same.
  • The patient should not have urinated within the last hour, collect the first 20-60 mL of urine in a sterile preservative free cup. Label with PID and date/time of collection.

Laboratory Personnel or Designee:

  • Urine Collection Specimen Processing now must be done on site:
    • **Please follow these guidelines for proper transferring of the urine into the correct collection device. ** If not properly transferred the original specimen cup cannot be used.
    • At our clinics: the new kits will be dropped off by our couriers by Aug. 11, 2023, and the old kits will be collected. The old collection kits cannot be run on the new testing platform.
  • Please use these codes when ordering new kits from lab supply ongoing: Swab-8305, Urine: 500590
  • If home collection is wanted, collection kits are available for pick up at the Specimen Management window at Salem Health Regional Laboratory.
