At Salem Health Orthopedics, trauma surgeons are working in an ever-adapting and changing field.
“The types of injuries we see are no different than what has been seen for decades, but there are new ways to view and treat these injuries,” said trauma surgeon Andrew Hadeed, DO.
New technology improves patient outcomes
Dr. Hadeed said these new developments include screws that can bend around the tight corners of the pelvis and others that allow bones to grow into the screws themselves.
Another change is using artificial intelligence (AI) to guide surgery.
“This has been integrated into the orthopedic profession for years but is just starting to make its way
into orthopedic trauma,” said Dr. Hadeed. “There will likely be a day in the near future that we have screws and metal implants guided through bones with the use of AI, instead of relying on
X-rays for
minimally invasive surgery.”
For example, he recently used a new imaging system, called an O-arm, to provide a 3D view of a patient during surgery.
“This helped me guarantee that placing long screws in the pelvis was done safely and away from any
nerves or blood vessels. There are no barriers at Salem Health for obtaining state-of-the-art equipment and care,” he said.
The orthopedic surgeon said Salem Health has access and experience with many of these new technologies, and they’re ready to use these tools if they can help patients.
“I have personally called in implants from other states to use in a situation where nothing else has worked,” said Dr. Hadeed.

Dr. Hadeed said the goal of his job is to help patients heal and return to their normal life, and new innovations allow trauma surgeons to achieve that goal by decreasing complication rates and improving outcomes.
“It is very important to be up-to-date with new technology so we can understand the risks and benefits of all options for optimizing patient outcomes,” he said. “As a patient, you want a surgeon who knows not just the intricacies of the procedure they are performing, but also the complications that can arise and how to manage them.”
