Epic add-on orders for specimen tests start Feb. 23

See workflow to request additional tests for up to 24 hours
By: Andrew Judd, MD, Laboratory Medical Director; and Jenny Clow, Lab Manager
Epic is adding the ability to request additional tests using an existing specimen in the laboratory. When a specimen is available, clinicians can now request additional testing for up to 24 hours using the “add to existing specimen” button within the order screen.
This will minimize unnecessary venipunctures by expanding the potential to use add-on orders for up to 24 hours. The add-on process has also been enhanced from order to result to improve turnaround times. With this enhancement, using order comments is no longer an appropriate method to add testing to an existing specimen.
Enhancement details
- Hospital-based providers can place all add-on orders in Epic. Add-on orders, when possible, are available for up to 24 hours by clicking the “add to existing specimen” button within the order. (Some tests are not stable for 24 hours, and their add-on window will be customized based on their individual stability.)
- The add-on order routes to the Epic add-on in-basket in the Laboratory.
- Specimen management acts on the add-on request and locates the specimen.
- Specimen management acknowledges the add-on in Epic, and the specimen is automatically picked up by the automation line and sent to run the test.
Please use the above workflow to enter add-on orders.
