The Oregonian/OregonLive has recognized Salem Health as a Top Workplace in Oregon and southwest Washington for the fifth time out of the eight years it has given the award. The region’s Top Workplace rankings were determined using employee surveys. The survey asked about concrete facts like pay and benefits, but also about company values, leadership and culture.

Becoming a place people consider a top workplace doesn’t happen on its own; it’s the product of hard work and many years of focused effort. Salem Health intentionally works to build a unique workplace culture that attracts diverse, caring and talented people.

This culture embraces transparency and empowers employees to drive workplace improvement on a daily basis. Many organizations solve problems at a management level, forcing change downward. Salem Health believes those on the front line doing the work and caring for patients are best positioned to drive continuous improvement.

“At Salem Health, we believe the person doing the work knows their job best and where the opportunity exists to improve it,” said Jaime Nichols, Salem Health vice president of human resources. “We take that to heart by asking each staff member to identify opportunities to improve the work in their own department. The end product is better patient care.”

Every voice matters, so Salem Health uses the tools of Lean management to empower every employee to submit ideas and solve problems. As a result, processes are refined day by day, benefitting our patients and employees.

Salem Health’s culture relies on trustworthy leaders and dependable coworkers. Every employee has meaningful work to do, contributing a piece to the compassionate care provided to patients. These ingredients make for an exciting and satisfying workplace.

The culture at Salem Health is bolstered by competitive pay and benefits, investments in continuing education and pride from delivering award-winning care.

Salem Health is the premier health care provider for Oregon’s Mid-Willamette Valley. Made up of hospitals in Salem and Dallas, a medical group of primary and specialty care providers, plus other clinics and services — it has provided pioneering medicine since 1896. Not only that:

  • It’s also Salem's largest private employer, with more than 4,900 employees.
  • About 770 providers are on the active medical staff, representing 53 different specialties.
  • About 685 people provide non-medical support as hospital volunteers.

Salem Health is a community-based, not-for-profit institution. The board of trustees comprises 13 volunteers who share a common belief: To heal the sick and injured — not answer to stockholders.

Salem Hospital is one of Oregon's largest acute care hospitals, licensed for 494 acute-care beds and operating the busiest single emergency department on the West Coast. West Valley Hospital in Dallas, with its 180 employees, offers a wide range of services – from ER, surgery and digital imaging to OB/GYN, rehabilitation and nutrition counseling.
