Plasma urgently needed from recovered COVID-19 patients

Salem Hospital is taking part in a national trial involving convalescent plasma for the treatment of patients who are seriously ill with COVID-19.
In coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the American Red Cross is seeking people who
have recovered from COVID-19 because they could become convalescent plasma donors.
Plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 contains antibodies that attack the virus – and it’s being evaluated as a treatment for patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections. It could also help people
who are at high risk of the disease becoming severe or life-threatening. Salem Health could also provide that plasma to current coronavirus patients.
People may qualify to become a donor if they meet these requirements:
- At least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds. Additional weight requirements apply for donors age 18 or younger.
- In good health. They generally feel well, even if they're being treated for a chronic condition.
- Have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptom free and fully recovered from COVID-19.
People who believe they may qualify should contact their primary care provider. They can also register online with the Red Cross.
A Red Cross representative will follow up with prospective candidates to confirm eligibility.
