What to expect during a plastic surgery consultation
The unknowns can be daunting for those considering cosmetic surgery.

“They will hear about the risks and possible complications,” said Dr. Monsivais. “While not all surgeries carry the same risk, all surgeries do carry risk so it is important that patients understand the entire process, including the things that may not go according to plan.”
The plastic surgeon said she also discusses postoperative expectations, recovery and long-term results.
“Consultations are so important because they are an opportunity to learn about the procedure, ask questions and get to know your surgeon,” said Dr. Monsivais. “Our goal is for patients to come away from their consultation with an understanding of their surgery and realistic expectations about what is possible and what is right for them.”

So, what types of questions should patients be asking during this process?
“It is important to ask questions about the surgery to ensure a good understanding of the procedure,” said Dr. Monsivais. “It is also important to ask if your doctor is a board-certified plastic surgeon.”
Dr. Monsivais said a lot of information is presented during the consultation, and it can be overwhelming.
“It is always a good idea to bring a friend or partner and have someone take notes to make sure you understand every step of the process before, during and after surgery,” she said.
During this appointment, Dr. Monsivais said she aims to comfort patients by breaking down the procedure in a way that’s easy to understand.
