Breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery that uses implants to increase the size of the breasts.
Sharon Monsivais, MD, is a plastic surgeon at Salem Health. Dr. Monsivais said patients are put to sleep with general anesthesia during the surgery and then are able to go home the same day.
What to expect from breast augmentation
“The surgery can involve different types of incisions, but most commonly, it is an incision underneath the breast and will be hidden,” she said. “The implant can go on top of the chest wall muscle or underneath, depending on what your surgeon determines to be the best for you.”
Dr. Monsivais said recovery is different for everyone, but she recommends four to six weeks of avoiding intense activity and heavy lifting so the body can heal.
Recovery and restrictions
“That includes weightlifting, cardio or intense housework or yard work,” she said. “If a patient's job requires lifting, they need to be on modified duty or off completely. Generally, patients can wean off narcotic medication within a few days and can switch to Tylenol or ibuprofen as needed.”
The plastic surgeon said some people heal quickly and feel back to normal much faster than four weeks. However, she urges patients to take restrictions seriously.
“Patients should listen to their body and, if something is painful after surgery, they should not do it. If there are any concerns, they should reach out to their surgeon as soon as possible,” said Dr. Monsivais.
Dr. Monsivais said she and her team take time to really listen to patients to ensure they are comfortable.
“We work with patients by providing information, counseling and enough time with each consultation so patients can ask questions and understand the process,” she said.
