Adaptive equipment

Part of any rehabilitation program is assessing your need for adaptive equipment.

Although full recovery and a return to normal is always the goal, sometimes it is necessary to use special equipment. These products increase your independence and improve your ability to accomplish daily activities.

Examples of adaptive equipment include:

  • Wheelchairs
  • Grab bars
  • Car modifications
  • Assistive devices used for dressing and eating
  • Orthotic insoles
  • Braces and splints

Also included in adaptive equipment are “cognitive prosthetics”—such as smart phones and tablets programmed to help you remember and stay focused. Augmentative communication devices are often prescribed to patients in order for them to be able to communicate effectively.
