After reviewing recent test results for our respiratory pathogen panel with COVID-19, we identified a limitation with our current testing platform that may have affected the accuracy of test results.
There is a potential for false negative results for the detection of mycoplasma pneumoniae, particularly the M129 strain. We want to assure you that we are taking the necessary corrective actions and are actively working with the manufacturer as they continue their investigation into this issue.
About 0.18% of patients tested at Salem Health on the Respiratory Pathogens Panel tested positive for mycoplasma pneumoniae. This infection rate closely matches the estimated annual rate of infection for the U.S. of 0.6 to 1.0%.1 Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections are more common during the summer and early fall, from outbreaks mostly in crowded environments, like college dorms, military training facilities and nursing homes.
