Epic alerts for ALL high-risk medication combinations begin June 17

15 Jun 2025

Want to improve Epic alerts? Join our steering committee

By: G. Andrew Clarke, MD, chief medical information officer

A team of inpatient and outpatient providers, pharmacists and clinical informatics staff — known as the Medication Alert Steering Committee — meet monthly to improve medication alerts in Epic. Their goal is to enhance patient safety while minimizing alert fatigue. They use system data to guide alert improvements.

Currently, providers see most drug-drug interactions (DDIs) that are unsafe to use together. Starting Tuesday, June 17, a new tool will show all such high-risk combinations when ordered.

This change will help reduce the risk of serious medication-related harm but may also increase the number of alerts.

If you’re interested in joining the committee or have questions about medication alerts, please contact Drew Clarke, MD, chief medical information officer.
