Admission process change for outpatient to Salem Hospital
June 14, 2026
Effective June 22, see exception
By: Matt Boles, MD, Chief Medical Officer
We have an important change in our outpatient to Salem Hospital admission process.
Starting Monday, June 22, all patients requiring hospital admission must be directed to the Salem Hospital Emergency Department (ED) for an expedited check-in and admission process. Patients will no longer be directly admitted to an inpatient unit.
Exception
- Labor and delivery: All pregnant patients with an obstetric concern should continue to go directly to Labor and Delivery during Building D open hours.
Why this change matters:
- Expedited Medical Screening Examination (MSE): Every patient will receive an expedited MSE to determine the appropriate level of care and correct bed placement using a standardized process.
- Improved triage: We have adjusted ED workflows to efficiently expedite triage and admit these patients while meeting all federal screening requirements.
- Improved patient safety: This process accounts for any changes in a patient’s condition between the time of admission request and arrival to the hospital.
What you need to do:
- Send all direct patient admissions to the Salem Hospital ED, following above exception for pregnant patients.
- Call Patient Placement. This required courtesy call lets us know if a patient is on their way and initiates our expedited admission standard work between Patient Placement and our Emergency Department team members. Call our switchboard at 503-814-5200 and have Patient Placement paged. All patients will receive an expedited triage and MSE upon ED arrival.
Thank you for your partnership in making sure our patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time — every time.
