Urinalysis test changed; thanks for your feedback

Supports our CAUTI prevention strategy

By: Kristi Gaskill, MSN, RN, CIC, RNC-NIC, Infection Prevention Manager

As part of our catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention strategy, we identified an opportunity for the urinalysis (UA) reflex to culture order.

Fiscal year-to-date data show infections attributed to documentation of dysuria, frequency and urgency in patients who have had an indwelling urinary catheter removed within the previous 48 hours and are otherwise asymptomatic. These symptoms are expected during this period due to urethral inflammation, bladder sensitivity and normal bladder readjustment.

With provider feedback and input, the Strategy Deployment Team partnered with Clinical Informatics to update the UA reflex to culture order to better align with appropriate clinical indications and support our lab and antibiotic stewardship.

Since April 9, the order includes updated options with carve-outs for specific at-risk populations (see screenshot below for details).

Please cascade this information to your teams. Thank you!
