Salem Hospital patients can check out iPads

21 May 2023

Video conferencing included, just ask staff

By: Olivia Alley, technical communications coordinator

After removing iPhones patients used to connect with loved ones during COVID-19, a technology gap has emerged.

Salem Health created a system for staff to check out loaner iPads for patient use. So far, two iPads are available with the possibility of expanding to 12 if the need arises.

The iPads are on goose-neck stands for ease of use by patients, and can be rolled next to a bed or chair. The iPad cannot be removed from the stand.

Popular video conferencing apps (FaceTime, Zoom and WebEx) have been installed. These iPads are available in B1 House Operations on a first-come, first-served basis.

Patient care staff can check out and return an iPad by badging into a workstation and selecting one of the iPads to check out. Tip sheets were created, laminated, and attached to the iPad stands for information on how to use the iPad and the applications.

Ask a staff member to help; also call the Solution Center at 503-814-4357 (4-HELP internally).
