Sleep Friendly AM Rounds Test of Change starts Dec. 15
By: Zubaria Iram, MD, Adult Hospitalist Medical Director; and Jenny Clow, Laboratory Manager
About 30% of Salem Hospital patients answer “always” to the question, “During this hospital stay, how often were you able to get the rest you needed?” This highlights an opportunity to improve care.
Reduced sleep contributes to adverse health outcomes, impaired recovery and comorbidities, such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, delirium and post-hospitalization syndrome. The Sleep Friendly Rounds Test of Change (TOC) targets patients most sensitive to sleep disruption while monitoring the impact on Length of Stay initiatives.
Test of Change details
- Hospitalists covering A5E and A6E may opt to order “Sleep Friendly AM Rounds” instead of traditional AM Rounds.
- To order “Sleep Friendly AM Rounds” collection, select the “Sleep Friendly TOC (A5E and A6E only) 0700” frequency button when placing AM Rounds orders:

- Phlebotomy will draw “Sleep Friendly AM Rounds” orders starting at 7 a.m. These will be routine orders like traditional AM Rounds.
- Results for “Sleep Friendly AM Rounds” specimens are expected in the patient chart by 9 a.m.
- When you order labs on units not participating in the TOC, please avoid using the “Sleep Friendly TOC (A5E and A6E only) 0700” frequency button. Orders placed using this button outside of the TOC units (A5E and A6E) will be treated as routine orders.
