New Bronchoscopy tool improves cancer detection

New robot for minimally invasive lung biopsies

By: Danielle Zacharias, PMO project manager

Salem Health’s Endoscopy Department is excited to now offer Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy procedures to patients, which started April 25.

This system is a medical device used for minimally invasive lung biopsies, offering enhanced precision, reach and stability compared to traditional bronchoscopy.

It allows doctors to reach and biopsy suspicious nodules in the periphery of the lungs, enabling earlier and more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer.

Unlike conventional flexible bronchoscopy, where a proceduralist operates the scope with their hands, robotic assisted bronchoscopy allows physicians to operate a thin and ultra maneuverable flexible catheter using a controller.

Faster diagnosis

  • The ION system can reduce the time it takes to diagnose lung cancer, potentially enabling faster treatment.

Improved treatment outcomes

  • Early detection of lung cancer can lead to more treatment options and improved survival rates.

Minimal discomfort

  • Patients typically experience less pain and discomfort compared to more invasive biopsy methods.

Quicker recovery

  • The minimally invasive nature of the procedure leads to faster recovery.
