27 Jul 2025

Module elevates cancer care for all patients

By: Olivia Alley, technical communications coordinator

Starting Monday, July 28, Salem Health will go live with Epic Beacon — a powerful oncology module designed to elevate cancer care for both adult and pediatric patients. Beacon enhances how we deliver chemotherapy, track treatment progress and support patients throughout their care.

What is Epic Beacon?

Epic Beacon is a specialized oncology module built to manage the complexities of cancer treatment. It supports medical and radiation oncology, hematology and survivorship care through a unified, protocol-driven platform that improves safety, coordination and clinical outcomes.

Key capabilities

  • Protocol-based chemotherapy and infusion treatment management
  • Standardized treatment plans for ordering/administering chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy tracking
  • Simplified cancer staging documentation
  • Submission of staging data to national registries (e.g. AJCC)
  • Comprehensive oncology history tracking
  • Integrated scheduling, authorization and billing tools
  • Oncology-specific EMR for seamless record exchange
  • Unified database for protocols and side effect management
  • Real-time access to treatment updates and summaries

Infusion department update

As part of the Beacon implementation, Salem Health’s Infusion Department — formerly known as SHAPES — is now a standalone department. This change enhances visibility and coordination across oncology services. Additionally, the SHAPES pharmacy has been renamed and is now listed in Epic as the Infusion Pharmacy, aligning with the new departmental structure and improving clarity for ordering and administration workflows.
