Changes to COVID-19 vaccination requirements

02 Jul 2023

Staff vaccine or medical/religious exemption no longer required

By: Dana Hawkes, director of clinical and medical staff development and support services

During the COVID-19 pandemic, CMS rules required all health care staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical or religious exemption. CMS recently modified this requirement, and effective June 27, 2023, Salem Health no longer requires COVID-19 vaccination or a medical/religious exemption. Our policy will reinforce the recommendation to remain up-to-date with vaccines.

Salem Health’s Medical Staff Office still requires vaccinations and/or approved declinations from providers. This policy will be reviewed at the July 13 Medical Executive Committee meeting to align with CMS rules. The MEC will review the Fitness for Duty policy for alignment opportunities regarding credentialed and privileged providers.

Despite the mandatory requirement being lifted, we are still required to monitor and report to CMS the vaccination status of our organization.
