Breast surgical referral process streamlines April 1

22 Mar 2026

Help ensure timely, coordinated access for patients

By: Patricia Luckeroth, MD, Breast Surgeon and Breast Medical Director; and Eric Laro, MD, General Surgeon and Cancer Committee Chair

The referral process for patients needing breast surgical consultations for cancerous or benign conditions is changing.

Starting April 1, please direct all breast-related referrals to the Salem Health Breast Care Center to ensure timely, coordinated access for our patients and streamline referrals.

Salem Health is proud to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). As part of this commitment, we uphold all accreditation standards, including working toward the new requirement that stages I to III breast cancer patients who are without pre-surgical treatment receive surgery within 60 days of diagnosis.

To meet these expectations and improve patient care, we are working closely with Breast Oncology nurse navigators and the Cancer Support Services team to improve workflows, engage with patients earlier and reduce time to surgery.

Questions about when a referral to a breast specialist is recommended? Refer to the Salem Health Cancer Center Physician Diagnostic Algorithms, which include guidance for patient workup.

We appreciate your partnership and look forward to continuing to care for your patients with the highest level of quality and compassion.
