Coder

The HIM Coder assigns codes and other records as may be determined by utilizing standard coding classifications. They may abstract information from the medical record, and enter codes or other data into the computer system.

Duties

For medical records of inpatients, outpatients, and the Emergency Department, they must assign codes utilizing standard procedural coding systems at a high accuracy and productivity rate.

They abstract information from medical records to enter diagnoses, procedures and revenue codes in EPIC (electronic medical records system), update information in EPIC and manage assigned work queues in EPIC. They must also complete a production spreadsheet daily for their Coding Manager to review.

Interactions

Coders must communicate effectively with the record completion team, Physicians (corresponding through emails or physician queries), and other HIM staff.

Education/Requirements

Graduation from an AHIMA accredited college or trade school is required along with licensure as a Registered Health Information Technician, and licensure as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
