Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence

Salem Hospital was the first Oregon hospital to earn the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

Salem Hospital made history again as the first hospital in Oregon and just one of 18 in the nation to earn the honor a second and third time.

The Beacon Award recognizes the nation's top hospital units caring for acutely and critically ill patients.

American College of Nurse-Midwives distinction

Willamette Valley Midwives is proud to be recognized by the American College of Nurse-Midwives for earning the distinction of "best practice" in the U.S. for lowest percentage of cesarean sections and highest percentage of vaginal births.

The annual study identifies those best clinical practices that lead to the best outcomes.

Nationally accredited breast center

Salem Cancer Institute is one of only three cancer centers in the state to receive the distinction of being a nationally accredited breast center by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.

Patients receiving care at an accredited center can count on comprehensive state-of-the-art services, a multi-disciplinary approach to coordinated care, information about clinical trials and new treatment options.

Nationally recognized by U.S.News & World Report

For their  2012-2013 Best Hospitals Guidebook, U.S.News & World Report analyzed data on nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals to identify the best—which included us!

They rated Salem Hospital “high-performing” in pulmonology in their “Best Hospitals 2013” rankings. They also ranked us the 8th best hospital in Oregon overall and one of the “Most Connected” hospitals for our adoption of electronic records.

To be nationally ranked, a hospital must excel across a range of tough cases within a given specialty, so we’re very proud to be on the list!

Level II Trauma Center accreditation

The Oregon Department of Human Services has accredited Salem Hospital as a Level II Trauma Center, ready to care 24/7 for the Willamette Valley’s most seriously injured patients.

Every trauma patient who arrives in the emergency department is met by a 10-member trauma team consisting of physicians, nurses and other support staff to ensure rapid evaluation and treatment of their injuries.

National model for psychiatric care

Salem Hospital is one of ten hospitals identified by the Federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as a national model for reducing the use of seclusion and restraints in psychiatric care.

The designation recognizes those centers that have implemented practices that keep both patients and staff in a safe environment.

Joint Replacement Center of Excellence

Salem Hospital, in partnership with Hope Orthopedics of Oregon, is nationally recognized as a top provider of excellence in joint-replacement care.

That’s why we are in the process of applying for the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for certification in joint replacements.

Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

Salem Hospital’s Bariatric Surgery Center has been named by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®.

The designation recognizes a consistent track record of favorable outcomes in weight-loss surgery.

Since many insurance companies require members to use a center of excellence, more people can now have surgery and follow-up care close to home.

HHS sustained improvement award

Salem Hospital is the only Oregon hospital to earn one of the first-ever sustained improvement awards given by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for achievement in eliminating ventilator-associated pneumonia and central-line associated bloodstream infections in the intensive care unit.

Salem Hospital has had none of these types of infections for a significant period of time. The Salem Hospital intensive care unit was among 10 hospital units to be honored for this achievement in both infection types.

Regional leader for organ donation

Salem Hospital was the first recipient of the Pacific Northwest Transplant Bank’s newly-created LifeSaver Award, which goes to a hospital or patient care unit that has done something out of the ordinary to make organ donation possible.

Organ donation is often the more difficult path, due to clinical, family or timing obstacles, and we are proud to be recognized among those who do the right thing for patients, even when it is not the easy thing.

Language Access team recognized

Salem Hospital is the first hospital in Oregon—and one of the few in the nation—to have the majority of its interpreters nationally certified by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters.

Both our Spanish- and Russian-speaking interpreters are certified, which means they have gone through extensive training in medical terminology and cultural sensitivity.
