Pharmacy update: Walmart’s new opioid limits

Limits begin for acute pain, daily quantity; use reference chart

By Matthew Tanner, pharmacy clinical coordinator and anticoagulation clinic director

Walmart has a new policy that limits opioid fills for acute pain to a seven-day supply – and limits the quantity filled per day to the equivalent of 50 mg of morphine.

Also, the Care Mark/CVS insurance systems now require a prior authorization for daily doses greater than 50 morphine equivalents. For now, Walmart is the only pharmacy implementing this policy in all stores, regardless of a patient’s insurance.
